What information can an IBAN checker provide?

An IBAN contains a country code, checksum and country-specific account details. The iban24 checker validates this structure for all twelve supported countries and retrieves the encoded bank identifier, optional branch code and account number. When bank data is available, it also displays the bank name and BIC.

This helps when checking payment details from an invoice, separating an IBAN into fields required by accounting software, or finding the BIC for an international form.

How to check an IBAN

The checker removes formatting spaces, confirms that the length and character pattern match the country, and validates the Modulo 97 checksum. It then looks up the bank code in the available regional dataset.

What a valid result means

A valid result means that the IBAN is structurally plausible and its checksum is correct. It does not confirm that the account is active, that funds can be received, or that the named payment recipient owns the account. Account-holder information is not encoded in an IBAN.

For new recipients or unusually large payments, confirm bank details through a separate trusted channel. A checksum protects against many typing errors, but it does not protect against fraud involving a different valid IBAN.

Reliable bank matching is available for all twelve supported countries. The page shows the applicable official source and the most recent successful update date when known. Bank names and BICs come from those datasets and may lag behind very recent institutional changes.

What is the difference between calculating and checking an IBAN? +

The calculator creates an IBAN from a bank code and account number. The checker starts with an existing IBAN and extracts its bank code, account number, BIC and bank name.

Can this tool identify the account holder? +

No. The account holder’s name is not encoded in an IBAN and cannot be determined by this tool.

What does an invalid checksum mean? +

It means at least one character is likely incorrect. Check the IBAN with the sender before using it for a payment.

Does the checker support other countries? +

Are submitted IBANs stored? +

No. An IBAN is processed for the current check and is not stored permanently.

Do I still need a BIC for SEPA transfers? +

An IBAN is normally sufficient within SEPA. A BIC may still be requested for other international payments or by some services.
